  • Here marks The End

Ok, folks. This is it. I'm going to move my blog. I apologize in advance for the inconvenience, but I know many of you will welcome my switch to Blogger.

Xanga was good to me for over 5 years (Michelle, you got me started!), but I think I've worn out my welcome. I am hoping to someday export my Xanga blog to Blogger, but at this time I can't figure out how, so we will just start over. I think I can't export it actually, but if someone knows how, please let me know. I was able to create a .xml file from Xanga (I think), but unable to import it to Blogger.

You can always come back here for the link to the new blog. And Xanga will be here (ok, maybe not forever) if we want to come back and reminisce.

Here is the link to my new blog: http://blonderubikscube.blogspot.com/

But hang on - it will still be "private" which means you will need to be logged in to Blogger or Google...and you will need an invitation from me. Give me a few days to get those out, but if you're getting impatient or just don't want to be left out, send me your email address and I'll try to get your invite out ASAP! Or I should say ASASiAN (as soon as Sarah is asleep next). I promise you won't miss any exciting posts in the meantime. Just give me a few days to figure out my new blog.

And of course, please let me know if you have any questions or encounter any problems.

    So long, Xanga!

  • 1 nap, new time

We are officially down to one nap. It's been over a week now with no looking back. It does make for quite a long morning...but we're (I'm) getting used to our new normal. And of course, it's nice to not have to worry about that nap.

Sarah and I voted last week. She was in love with her "I vote, I count" sticker.

We have survived the time change so far. I was trying to push the schedule last week and Sarah did ok. Today she was up at her (new) normal time but was practically begging to go to bed over an hour early. She "stole" her blankie from the crib and was laying on the floor with it. Poor thing.

Sarah says, "PLEASE, get me out of here!"

    "I'm ALL DONE!"

Sarah often requests a moment of coloring.

This is a special truck from Matt's childhood. Sarah likes to push it around and sit on it and be pushed on it. Jane also likes to sit on it...and actually stayed long enough for Sarah to push her!

Sarah loves to get out blankets and sit on them or lay on them or put her stuffed animals "night night". The cats enjoy that she just leaves them there. Somehow, Sarah managed to leave Penny alone all morning...she looked so comfortable.

  • Video dictionary?

I thought Sarah was so cute in her PJ top, white diaper and socks...
    IMG_0172 IMG_0173 IMG_0174

    Oh, how she loves yogurt.
    IMG_0196

I'm having fun catching Sarah's first words on camera. Maybe I'll compile a little dictionary someday.

Kitty. This technically was Sarah's first word and she says it better than she does in this video. The brown kitty was a special homemade gift from a family friend - really, the daughter of my mom's good friend from way back. I suppose her girls might be like cousins to me, though I can't actually remember meeting them (there are many states between us). And if you want to get complicated, there is some blood relation up there in our family trees. This fleecey cat is so nice and soft - such a special gift. Thanks again, Jeni!

Apple. This is a fun one. Sarah will say apple over and over and over again. AH!-pul AH!-pul AH!-pul

She has learned pumpkin, too (and the sign sort of), since we see them all over, but what she says sounds more like "cracker" than pumpkin. She does also say "cracker" in the appropriate context.

Jesus. Sarah loves one of my old tapes (yes, a cassette! still trying to figure how to get it on CD/mp3 without paying for one), Wee Sing Bible Songs, which is full of all the classic, simple songs all children should learn in church (IMHO). She smiles and dances when I put it on. I think this has helped her learn "Jesus."

Feeling pretty savvy that I edited 2 videos together on this one...

Up and down. Ok, she doesn't say these in the video, but she can. It's so funny that after learning to stand and walk, sitting down on something is another skill to learn! Bonus "music" sign at the end.

I went to my 10 year high school reunion last weekend. That makes me feel a little old, but oh well. I really enjoyed high school, but it seems so long ago and hard to remember. A lot has happened since then! The reunion was interesting. I'm glad I went and we had a good time, mostly because Jenny and Robbie were there. Though we could only recall one shared class in high school (sophomore chemistry), Jenny and I have been friends since 8th grade, went to church and Bible studies together, were in each others weddings and gave birth to our daughters within hours of each other. Love you, Jenny!

  • Sweet 16 (months)

My sweet Sarah is 16 months old today.
    IMG_0167

    I love her.

Here's a funny "miniature" effect the camera was doing when I first started taking pictures. Sarah's head is kind of in the blurry part...
    IMG_0147 IMG_0148

Sitting on the rock. She likes to back up to things and sit down.
    IMG_0161 IMG_0164

She was trying to put the round pumpkin on the sloped rock which wasn't working very well and made her not like the pumpkin.

  • All in a day's play

I'm on a roll and excited about my new video downsizing ability. I've spent way too much time on the computer tonight, but I think it's been worth it...and I've been doing dishes while waiting on uploads, so it's not a complete loss.

    Pictures first.

Earlier this week, Sarah was playing next door with the neighbor girls. Vivienne is a week older than Sarah. I'm not sure what she thought of her fancy car ride...
    IMG_0077 IMG_0078
    IMG_0080 IMG_0081

    And then wagon ride.
    IMG_0085 IMG_0087

Poor Eli is oldish and deaf and would probably let Sarah climb all over him. She just sneaks in a single pat and squeals with joy. "wuff wuff wuff!!!"
    IMG_0083

I'm not sure what this face is all about. That's a big mouth!
    IMG_0089

    Here's Sarah sorting her mail.
    IMG_0092 IMG_0093
    IMG_0095 IMG_0096

And playing peek-a-boo...aka run and "hi!"

    And dancing.

  • The B-I-B-L-E

I'm so excited! I figured out how to reduce the file size on the videos from our new camera so I can upload them. At least it worked this once...

Anyways. Sarah's vocabulary is expanding to 2 syllable words. Bubble and now Bible. I'm seeing a "b" theme here...it must be the easiest consonant to say? maybe why the cats still say "boo" according to Sarah?

I caught Sarah's first "Bible" on camera.

  • Pumpkin Patch

Shortly after my previous post I broke my camera - so sad. But we rejoice in an early Christmas gift so you will not have to experience a lapse in updates or Sarah pictures!

    Then and now.
    IMG_7132 IMG_0045

I remembered this picture from about a year ago. Sarah was 4 months old and I had just started putting her in the stroller without the infant seat. The colors were much more vibrant last year!

Today we took a family outing to a local orchard. It was a beautiful day. Not a cloud in the sky! We couldn't resist lunching on a few corn dogs and fried biscuits and apple butter. Oh. Yummm. Mmmm. And some animal crackers.
    IMG_0053

Sarah's new straw sipping skill was rewarded with the sweet taste of cider slushie! Big smiles on that one.

We waited for the pumpkin patch wagon to arrive. Sarah is just the cutest!!
    IMG_0054
    IMG_0056 IMG_0058

Sarah liked the ride, but was a little nervous.
    IMG_0060 IMG_0062

She enjoyed traipsing around. She only took one "pumpkin tumble" which involved somehow runnnig into a pumpkin and rolling off of it...
    IMG_0066 IMG_0068
    IMG_0070 IMG_0072

We brought home a few pumpkins and lots of apples. And memories.

  • It's October, but it's warm?

How about a silly kitty picture? Here's Jane in Sarah's wagon. I turned around one night and there she was sitting there. I can't believe she even stayed while I took a picture. I did not attempt to pull her. She's so funny.

    IMG_0072

Sarah is learning how to drink from a straw. Water is so much more fun that way! At least until she tips the cup up and can't figure out why it doesn't work that way...

    IMG_0070

Not only does she like to share her drinks with the stuffed animals, she tries to give them to the kitties, which sometimes means chasing them with her cup. The kitties are not interested.

Enjoying some Veggie Tales with daddy.

    IMG_0058 IMG_0059

Our favorite little Colts fan. Go Colts!

    IMG_0052 IMG_0054

It is curious what children do sometimes. Sarah found these 2 boxes somewhere and put them down on the floor and put her hands together. Then she picked them up and ran over to the coffee table and did it again... Praying for the boxes? Not sure on this one.

    IMG_0060 IMG_0061

It's October and it's warm outside and we are enjoying it. After playing with some sidewalk chalk at the neighbors' the other night, it seemed like a good thing to do on a warm October afternoon.

    IMG_0074 IMG_0075
    IMG_0076

Kira, the super-friendly neighbor cat, came to visit. She's like Sarah's outside pet. Sarah LOVES her. Thankfully, Kira is very tolerant and self controlled around an excited toddler. She rolled around in the chalk and got it all over her fur. Oops!

    IMG_0081 IMG_0080

Here's Sarah wearing one of mommy's old sweaters. Either my mom of Aunt Diane made this one? I can't remember.

  • The park and a garage sale

I have been trying to post for a few days now...and have been suffering from technical difficulties...I must not let technology get the best of me (or steal too much of my time)!!

A week ago we had a picnic at the park. What a fun thing to do as a family! We brought sandwiches and ate on our blanket. Sarah ran around collecting acorns and we went for a walk on the trails. It was a beautiful day!

Touching the sun spots on the floor.
    IMG_9845 IMG_9846

Friday and Saturday we participated in our neighborhood garage sale. Friday was a lot of fun. It was a beautiful day and we had a steady stream of "visitors." Saturday was a bit of a disappointment since it was cold and raining most of the day...and   v  e  r  y   slow. But, among the 4 households represented by the stuff for sale, we made a nice profit and people took away some stuff we didn't want! Win-win.

I couldn't have pulled it off without my mom; she manned the garage most of the time because I was often coming or going from naps or meals with Sarah. Sarah loved being outside a lot more than normal and playing "with" (sometimes running from) the other children who came by. She did a really good job of occupying herself without making too much of a mess... but I don't even want to know how many animal crackers she ate off the garage floor.

    IMG_9852 IMG_9853
    IMG_9854 IMG_9856
    IMG_9855

I was able to sneak away to a few sales and got a couple deals myself. The cars are back in the garage, and there's a lot to put away or give away, but for now, I'm tired.

  • The end of an era...

    Baby me and LT Hult

At some point he was "Major Dad"... remember that TV show? I thought that was pretty cool.

The end of this month marks the end of my dad's 33 years in the US Army. He ran the ranks from private first class to brigadier general. He's served in all three army branches (active, reserve and national guard) and he's visited every state on official business. I can't really begin to sum up his amazing career. He has made a difference in countless lives for Christ and shaped the future of the national guard chaplaincy. We are very proud of him.

Wednesday afternoon, Sarah and I went to my dad's retirement ceremony at the Indiana National Guard state headquarters (there will be another one if DC). This is my old stomping grounds, in a sense, as I worked here 4 of the 5 years before Sarah was born.
    *

We mingled with the Adjutant General beforehand.
    **

    Watching Grandpa...
    *

MG Umbarger gave us his 2 star coins. Sarah loved this.
    **
    *

A table full of awards, honors and recognition...not that we need any of that to know my dad is a great soldier and chaplain!
    *

Sarah did an excellent job as a quiet participant in the ceremony for about 30 minutes (which involved stuffing her face full of goldfish crackers and raisins) and then we took our leave (it was in the middle of nap time after all!). I love this rug. I can't believe Sarah sat on it for me.

This all leads me to say... "What can you do with a general, when he stops being a general?" (I love this from White Christmas)

But really, we all know my dad will be as busy as ever. I overheard him answering someone who asked what he was going to do now, "Keep caring for people."
    *

And there will be a little extra time for that extra special granddaughter!
